Slovenia green
The Municipality of Litija has been the recipient of the Slovenia Green Destination Bronze Label since 2018. It has met the sustainability development and operational requirements defined for destinations by the Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism, thereby earning the Slovenia Green Bronze Label.

The Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism is a comprehensive system designed to promote the development of sustainable tourism in Slovenia. Its main goal is to enhance the competitiveness, quality, and innovativeness of Slovenian tourism. The Slovenian Tourist Board (STB), in cooperation with the accredited partner GoodPlace – the Institute for Sustainable Tourism, assesses how green and sustainable individual Slovenian municipalities and destinations are, based on international standards.
The attainment of the Slovenia Green Destination Bronze Label provides the Municipality of Litija with an internationally comparable sustainability assessment, a foundation for identifying appropriate future improvements, and greater visibility in both domestic and international markets. The sustainability evaluation process, conducted every three years, is managed by the Development Centre of the Heart of Slovenia, which proudly serves as the green coordinator for the destination. It regularly gathers evidence of compliance with prescribed global standards across five categories: destination management, nature and landscape, environment and climate, culture and tradition, and socio-economic conditions. The Development Centre of the Heart of Slovenia also organizes numerous activities to achieve sustainability indicators, such as meetings with tourism providers, trainings, workshops, the creation and dissemination of promotional materials, awareness-raising on sustainable practices, and the promotion of the destination’s green vision.
The destination follows an action plan, which is newly prepared every three years and clearly defines measures to improve weaknesses or eliminate shortcomings identified during the evaluation process. Through annual reports on implemented sustainability measures, the destination demonstrates the achievement of its set goals.

In Litija, We Keep It Clean and Green
Follow these simple rules to keep Litija clean and green

You will find 4 colours of bins in Litija: yellow, blue, brown, black and bigger white ones (you will find these at designated public areas with grouped recycling bins).
YELLOW:
PLASTIC PACKAGING:
Bottles (drinks, milk, cleaning products, liquid yoghurts); bags and foils (clean)…
METAL PACKAGING:
Cans (drinks, food – cleaned); metal tubes (toothpaste, creams)…
COMPOSITE PACKAGING:
Tetra Paks (milk, juices, cream, etc.); packaging made from a combination of plastic and metal.
IMPORTANT
Empty the packaging, clean off larger residues, flatten it (e.g. bottles, boxes), do not place it in bags!
ADDITIONAL TIP
Empty and flatten the packaging before disposal. This saves space and makes recycling easier. Dispose of it without contents and major impurities.
BLUE :
SEPARATION OF PAPER AND CARDBOARD PACKAGING
- NEWSPAPERS, MAGAZINES;
brochures, catalogs, and advertisements (without plastic covers) - NOTEBOOKS, OFFICE PAPER;
cardboard packaging (clean); wrapping paper (non-plastic-coated) - CARDBOARD, PAPER BAGS;
frozen food packaging (clean, cardboard)
MOST COMMON MISTAKES
The following do NOT belong with paper:
plastic-coated, waxed, dirty or greasy paper, tissues, napkins, food-stained packaging, photo paper, wallpaper, paper with dyes or chemicals.
IMPORTANCE OF PROPER SEPARATION
- Properly separated paper can be fully recycled into new paper, significantly reducing the need for logging trees.
- You directly contribute to reducing the carbon footprint, lowering energy use, and creating a cleaner environment.
BLACK:
MIXED WASTE
These are waste items that cannot be separately collected as paper, packaging, glass, organic, hazardous, or bulky waste.
Examples:
- Dirty tissues; paper towels; napkins; greasy packaging (not suitable for recycling)
- Cotton wool, cotton swabs; cigarette butts; sanitary pads, diapers; sponges, cleaning cloths
- Vacuum cleaner bags; food-stained packaging not suitable for separate collection; cellophane, wax paper, wallpaper
- Candle containers (if not clean and metallic); toothbrushes, razors; plastic cutlery
- Decorations made of mixed materials; hard plastic-coated paper, wax-coated cardboard
IMPORTANT
- Only items that do not belong anywhere else should go into the black bin.
- Always separate packaging, paper, organic, and hazardous waste!
- Doing this helps reduce processing costs, protects the environment, and helps meet the goals of Slovenia Green.
BROWN:
BIODEGRADABLE WASTE
Examples:
- Coffee grounds and filters; eggshells; food scraps without liquids; leaves; grass
- Weeds; small branches (in smaller quantities); sawdust; flowers with soil; wood ash (completely cooled)
MOST COMMON MISTAKES
Do NOT throw paper towels and tissues into the residual waste bin. These belong to biodegradable waste, so dispose of them in the brown bin.
HOW DO WE DISPOSE OF IT?
It’s best to collect biodegradable waste in paper bags, biodegradable polyethylene bags, or biodegradable bags made from corn (or other plant) starch.
Because these decompose 100% under the influence of heat and light, the waste can be disposed of in the brown bin together with the bag.
Leaves, weeds, and other garden waste can also be placed directly in the brown bin.
The only exception is cooking oil (used for frying, etc.), which must be collected in special containers and taken to a collection center or mobile unit according to a set schedule available in Ljubljana and surrounding municipalities.
BIG WHITE BINS:
GLASS WASTE
- Food and drink glass bottles
- Glass packaging of medicines and cosmetics
- Jars of pickled foods
- Other glass packaging
Do NOT dispose of the following in this bin:
- Window and other flat glass (take to the collection center)
- Neon, halogen, and incandescent bulbs, and fluorescent tubes (these are hazardous waste)
- Regular bulbs, car glass, mirrors, porcelain and ceramics, crystal and screen glass, plexiglass and carbon glass, laboratory and fireproof glass (dispose of these as residual waste)
HOW DO WE DISPOSE OF IT?
Always empty glass packaging and remove caps or lids.
- Dispose of caps in the packaging bin
- Dispose of cork stoppers in the black bin
Glass is an extremely valuable material, as it can be 100% recycled and reused indefinitely without losing quality.
