WINTER WONDERLAND IN LITIJA
In December, Litija becomes a magical city. Make sure you don’t miss out!
The festive atmosphere is created by hundreds of lights and various events. Special attention is paid to local tradition, mixed with urban elements. Enjoy the days when the city smells of festive tea and mulled wine, hot chocolate, baked apples and hoofs, walnut cake (“potica”), Christmas bread and of black charcoal bread. At the stalls, visitors can buy Christmas and New Year gifts, as well as different local delicacies for the upcoming holidays. The Sitarjevec Mine always participates in the Winter Wonderland and prepares special guided tours and festive events for visitors of all ages.

TREE-LIGHTING CEREMONY, ST. NICHOLAS FAIR AND TORCH WALK
On December 4, when the patron saint of miners celebrates her birthday, Litija lights up with beautiful holiday lights.
On St. Barbara’s name day, Litija holds its annual tree-lighting ceremony, accompanied by excellent music and richly laden stalls. The day ends with the annual torch walk, where the goblins and Litko (the official mascot of Litija), await the hikers who begin their journey in the old town centre and end it at the mine.
CHRISTMAS BREAD EXHIBITION
A special event meant for preserving the tradition of making Christmas bread, which is called “Poprtnik” in Slovene.
Every year in December, the City Museum of Litija organizes a workshop where people can bake their version of Christmas bread, and then exhibits the amazing products. The bread has always been part of the local and Slovenian cultural heritage, as it was said to have magical and healing powers.
CHRISTMAS FAIR
The old town of Litija is especially lively during the days leading up to Christmas.
While trying to hold in your excitement for the long-awaited visit of Santa Claus, you can browse through the stalls, neatly stacked with unique products and Christmas culinary delicacies. In the accompanying events, children are entertained by the street artists and popular children’s heroes.
SITARJEVEC MINE’S NATIVITY SCENE
Feel the spirit of Christmas and be amazed by a unique mineral nativity scene made by local artists.
Between Christmas and New Year, a special mineral nativity scene is on display at the Sitarjevec mine in Litija, as the mine is amongst the richest in Europe in terms of mineral diversity.
In December, the guided tours for visitors are complemented by Christmas choirs. In front of the mine’s entrance, visitor can also see the live nativity scene, but only on certain days.
PRE-NEW YEAR’S PARTY AND NEW YEAR’S EVE PARTY IN LITIJA’S WINTER WONDERLAND
Spend the last two days of the year at an unforgettable New Year’s party.
Celebrate New Year with good food and performances by popular bands of different musical genres, which will provide quality entertainment for all generations. The event is free for visitors.
